Teesside University’s External Examiner Sub-Committee [EESC] requires that all newly appointed External Examiners who are new to external examining have the support of a mentor. This is in addition to the support for External Examiners provided by the University’s Academic Registry [AR] and the University’s Academic Schools. Information regarding the External Examiner mentor process and guidelines are available in the External Examiner Handbook, appendix A.
Mentors will normally take on the role for one complete assessment cycle and a one-off fee of £100.00 is paid to mentors for each mentee. This mentoring fee is subject to deduction of PAYE in line with HMRC Regulations.
How do I obtain details of my mentoring role?
The mentoring guidelines are available in the External Examiner Handbook, appendix A.
What if I have been allocated a Mentor but they have not contacted me?
If the mentor has not contacted you within four weeks of your appointment please either contact the relevant School Administrator or email APR@tees.ac.uk, who will provide you with your Mentor's contact details.
How much do I get paid for acting as a Mentor?
A one off fee of £100, which is subject to PAYE deductions.
How do I claim my mentoring fee?
There is a section on the Expenses Claim Form to reclaim the one-off £100 mentoring fee for each mentee. Please note that the mentoring fee is subject to deduction of PAYE.
