Free Certification Offer
Teesside University is giving students and staff the opportunity to gain free Microsoft certifications. The courses are self-directed study with the option to sit the test for free; please note, no resit options are available. Please find below the certifications that are currently available.
Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) 2016 & 2019
Microsoft Office Specialist certification is an international recognised qualification to demonstrate you have the skills and expertise to proficiently use the Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access & Outlook). Build your confidence and gain invaluable knowledge to become efficient within your studies & workplace using the features and functions of Microsoft Office applications. Successful completion of the Microsoft Office Specialist certification qualification is an accolade and testament to how you are future ready when you graduate from Teesside.
This course is tailored for everyone; beginner, intermediate and advanced, to learn, enhance and develop their digital skills. The is a self-paced course, allowing you to learn at your own pace. Support from our certified Microsoft Office Specialist Masters, when you need it. The course provides all the learning material, online videos including mock tests to help you prepare for the actual test.
Adobe Certified Associate (ACA)
Gain an Adobe certification with an industry recognised qualification that certifies you have the skills and expertise to proficiently use the Adobe applications for video, design, photography and the web. ACA is a prerequisite qualification that you need in order to succeed in the high demand areas of digital communication and media.
Microsoft Certified Educator (MCE)
Primarily aimed at academic members of staff and future educators, the certification is validation of your global technology competencies required to facilitate 21st century learning using Microsoft's “21 CLD" framework and professional tools.
MCE certification demonstrates you can combine innovative ideas and technological skills to provide dynamic learning experiences for students using Microsoft tools.
Successful completion of the MCE professional qualification is an accolade and testament to how we prepare students to become future ready at Teesside University.
Microsoft Technical Certifications (MTC)
The Microsoft Certified Fundamentals is the pathway to fully understanding what cloud computing is, what options are available from Microsoft, and which options make sense for businesses to invest in. This is the starting point for students who are looking to start a career in artificial intelligence, data science, and cloud computing. With the usage of big data and artificial intelligence on the rise, the demand for data scientists is not being met—and the gap is widening.
Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) - Only available until 31st July 2021
The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification is an entry-level credential that validates fundamental technology skills and knowledge among students who are pursuing a career in technology. MTA addresses a wide range of critical technology concepts with exams that are designed to assess and validate core technical concepts in three primary areas: Developer, Database, and IT Professional.
The Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) certification program has served as a crucial asset providing and validating foundational skills for anyone venturing into the broad world of IT. Microsoft has recently decided to evolve their certifications to focus on job roles utilising Microsoft branded technology. As a result of these changes, Microsoft has elected to retire the MTA program. If you are currently studying for an MTA test, please plan to take the test before 31st July 2021.
Accessing the learning material
You can access the learning material via Microsoft Teams, click Join or create a team below your teams list and look for the Join a team with a code option. Please join the Team using the following code: 6pnn32q
Having joined the Team, look for the certification you are interested in and click the Files tab to find the relevant information for the course. Please also view the Posts tab for announcements.
If you would like further details regarding the free certifications, we run a weekly briefing session, every Wednesday at 2pm via Microsoft Teams from 6th January 2021 until 24th March 2021.

Booking a test
Due to Covid-19 pandemic, an online testing platform is now available. You can take the test from your home computer. You do not need to install any software on your computer, the test is accessed through a web browser. A web cam is not required. You can use any laptop or desktop running Windows 10, Mac OSX Sierra 10.12 (or higher) or ChromeOS. Testing on tablets & phones is not possible. Please refer to the Test Candidate Guide for Further details.
We can accommodate 10 candidates per session and is available on a first come, first served basis. You will need to be available approximately 15 minutes before the session to setup the remote test.
